Shambhala Sun - There Are No Words

Here is a link to a personal and tender account from Roshi Bernard Glassman on his practice of bereavement after the death of his wife, Sensei Sandra Jishu Holmes. Do yourself a favour and read it.

People ask me every day how I'm doing. I don't know how to answer them; there are no words. So I just tell them I'm bearing witness. It must be hard, they say. No. But isn't it sad? they ask. Isn't it painful? No, I say. It's raw, that's all. It's bearing witness, and the state of bearing witness is the state of love.

Unearthed this little treasure of a song from an old mixed tape last week and it put a smile on my face.

This video makes hanging out in the desert look REAL FUN.

Karl Alvarez Benefit Page

Check out this heartfelt message on the MySpace.com - Karl Alvarez Benefit Page which is looking to raise "money to cover medical expenses because punk rock doesn't have a benefit plan".

Karl Alvarez, bassist of The Descendents and All, suffered a minor heart attack on August 11th and while he is physically doing well, the mounting medical bills are taking a toll.

A MySpace page has been set up as a resource to organize benefit shows and taking gifts to help with medical expenses.

A Note To My Thoughts- A Poem by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

A Note To My Thoughts

Past, isn't it simply a fleeting thought?
Future, isn't it just a projection of mind?
Aren't they all simply just happening now?
What there is is only this moment --
So fresh, yet just another fleeting nowness!
The world that you see,
And the sounds that you hear,
Thoughts that arise randomly,
Aren't they all just happening in nowness?
Why don't you just let go of the past and future thoughts?
Why can't you simply relax in this beautiful world now?
Why do you sacrifice your present for your pure imaginations?
Hey! Hey! Wake up you, lazy dzogchen lama!

One City Prologue - "One City" by Ethan Nichtern

I can't express enough how much I am looking forward to reading Ethan Nichtern's new book 'One City'.

After checking out the prologue which you can read via the link below, I haven't been so stoked for the release of a book in a long time.

Ethan's writing style is so sharp and lucid and weaves Buddhist vernacular with a 21st century worldview that a 'young' Buddhist such as myself finds refreshing and inspiring.

On my to do list, under the line item for 'sit your ass down on the cushion tonight' will be to pre-order this book from Wisdom Publications. Thanks to them sending me their latest catalogue, my to do list is also filled up with ordering a kazillion books that I will have no time to read until I finish One City....

In my next life, I want to come back as a Buddhist librarian or maybe a printing press for Shambhala Publications.

No Impact Man

I love this blog..

"A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, composts his poop and while living in New York City, generally turns into a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, four seasons-loving wife along for the ride."

Dhamma Brothers

The always relevant and whipsmart website The Worst Horse has posted a link to a film which looks amazing...

Dhamma Brothers is the story of 36 prison inmates who participate in a 10 day Vipassana retreat. The film raises the question "is it possible for these me, some of whom have committed horrendous crimes, to change?"
